I believe the future is matriarchal — and I’m building it alongside the women I work with. I’ve coached 70+ Global Majority women to know their worth, lead on their own terms and build lives beyond the norms placed on them, and partnered with organisations including The ISC Group, the Women of Colour Global Network, Guardian News & Media, DK Publishing, Women for Women International, WOW London and BelEve to support the women working within them.
All of it draws on 7+ years in international development with UN Women, the World Bank, the EU and FCDO, leading programmes on ending violence against women and girls and women’s access to justice. Today I also lead the Women of Colour Global Network’s Pathways Mentoring Programme for The Guardian and DK Publishing.
Why the mission is matriarchy
Matriarchy is a future where women lead from care, community and our own values, and no longer shrink to fit systems that were never built for us. It means reclaiming four kinds of power: power over our own lives, time and boundaries; power within, our worth and our voice; power with, the sisterhood we build together; and power to, changing the systems we lead within.
In a matriarchal future, Global Majority women don’t have to choose between ambition and community, or between honouring our cultures and living on our own terms. Rest isn’t something we earn, boundaries aren’t selfish, and leadership looks like collaboration rather than competition. Our worth isn’t up for negotiation, and the wisdom we carry from our families and cultures is treated as strength, not something to leave at the door.
